The Five W’s of Mega Man Legacy Collection

A new feature that we are starting here at Geek Family Media is the Five W’s. The Five W’s is where we try to inform by answering key questions for upcoming video games.

Today’s game: Mega Man Legacy Collection

  • Title: Mega Man Legacy Collection
  • Developer: Digital Eclipse
  • Publisher: Capcom
  • Release: August 25, 2015
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo 3DS (Early 2016)

Mega Man Legacy Collection includes 6 full games. It’s a collection of HD Remasters for Mega Man 1 through 6 which were originally released on the Nintendo Entertainment System from 1987 to 1994.

Mega Man is one of the most beloved classic 8-bit video game characters of all time. Developer, Digital Eclipse, isn’t just porting the games over for a cash grab, they have included several new features that should excite any fan. First, they are including a Museum that features exclusive official art and sketches from the series. Next, you get a Database that shows each character in the game and gives their full bio in text form. And finally they have a Challenge Mode that pits you in specific challenges that will sometimes jump various stages and even various games to complete. If this collection was a Mega Man boss it would be Awesome Man!

I think there are 2 key audiences.  First, are people like me who grew up with Mega Man.  The nostalgia built into this package and the ability to replay some of my favorite games again in HD makes this a day one purchase for me.  Second, would be as a way to introduce the beloved hero to a new generation.  I don’t believe either of my kids have played a Mega Man game yet. This will be a cool way to let them jump in and experience some of the greatest games of all time. It is worth noting though, Mega Man has always been known for it’s difficulty. While it’s not unbeatable, there is definity some challenge in these games, so if you have younger gamers you may want to keep that in mind.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is out on August 25th in North America and it will be available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.  It will be available for digital purchase only through Xbox Live, PSN, or Steam.  Capcom has said there is plans to release a disc based Retail version in 2016 but there are no details on that release at this time. They have also announced a Nintendo 3DS port that will also be available sometime early 2016.

So there are the Five W’s you need to know about Mega Man Legacy Collection.  Be sure to keep an eye on our YouTube page as we will be doing Impressions and Let’s Plays of the Legacy Collection starting next week.
